What Is Happening in Your Body at 8 DPO?
At 8 DPO, if fertilization occurred, a fertilized egg has likely completed its journey through the fallopian tube and implanted (or is in the process of implanting) in your uterine lining. Implantation typically happens between 6–12 DPO, with the average being around 8–10 DPO.
Once implantation occurs, cells from the developing embryo begin producing hCG. In the first 24–48 hours after implantation, hCG levels are extremely low - often between 1–5 mIU/mL. Over the next few days, levels will double rapidly.
Can You Get a Positive Pregnancy Test at 8 DPO?
Yes, but it is uncommon. Because implantation may have only just occurred (or not yet happened) at 8 DPO, hCG levels are often still below the detection threshold of most home pregnancy tests.
Only the most sensitive tests - those with a detection threshold of around 6 mIU/mL, such as First Response Early Result - have any chance of detecting pregnancy at 8 DPO. Standard tests with a 25 mIU/mL threshold will almost always return negative at this stage.
A positive at 8 DPO is real but requires the most sensitive tests and early implantation. A negative at 8 DPO tells you very little about whether you are pregnant.

What Does a Faint Line at 8 DPO Mean?
If you see any line with color at 8 DPO, this is significant. It means hCG was detected at a very early stage, which usually indicates implantation has occurred and pregnancy is beginning.
However, very early positives at 8 DPO can sometimes be followed by a period arriving on time or slightly late - this is known as a chemical pregnancy, an early pregnancy loss. This is a natural occurrence and does not necessarily indicate any fertility issue.
The most important step after a faint line at 8 DPO is to retest in 48–72 hours. A healthy pregnancy will show a noticeably darker line as hCG doubles.
Symptoms at 8 DPO
At 8 DPO, early pregnancy symptoms - if any - are very subtle and easy to confuse with PMS. Some people experience light implantation cramping or spotting (implantation bleeding) around this time. Other common early symptoms include mild breast tenderness, fatigue, and changes in appetite.
However, many people have zero symptoms at 8 DPO even when pregnant. The presence or absence of symptoms is not a reliable indicator of pregnancy at this early stage.
