14 DPO Faint Line: A Positive at Your Missed Period

At 14 days past ovulation, your period is due today. This is the classic testing point — and a faint line at 14 DPO is now a very reliable positive. Here is what a faint line means at this stage and what to do next.

hCG Levels at 14 DPO

At 14 DPO, hCG levels in a progressing pregnancy are typically between 100 and 600 mIU/mL, though the range is wide. Early implanters may be approaching 1,000 mIU/mL, while those who implanted later may be in the 50–150 mIU/mL range.

All of these values are well above the detection threshold of standard home tests. By 14 DPO, virtually all viable pregnancies should produce a visible positive on a home test, at minimum a faint line.

Why Is the Line Still Faint at 14 DPO?

A faint line at 14 DPO does not mean something is wrong. The most common reason is later implantation — if implantation occurred at 10–12 DPO, the pregnancy is still very new and hCG has only been rising for a few days.

Urine dilution is another factor. If you tested after drinking a lot of fluids, hCG concentration in your urine may be lower than in first morning urine, producing a lighter line. Testing again with concentrated first morning urine will often show a darker line.

Is a 14 DPO Positive Reliable?

Yes — a positive at 14 DPO is about as reliable as a home pregnancy test gets. At this stage, hCG levels are high enough that a positive is almost always a true positive. The risk of a chemical pregnancy still exists but is lower than at earlier stages.

Continue retesting every 48 hours if you have a faint line, to confirm the line is darkening. A line that clearly progresses over the following days is a very strong indicator of a healthy early pregnancy.

Next Steps After a 14 DPO Positive

If you have a confirmed positive at 14 DPO, you are approximately 4 weeks pregnant. Contact your healthcare provider to schedule your first prenatal appointment, which typically takes place at 8–10 weeks gestation.

Begin taking a prenatal vitamin with folic acid if you are not already doing so. Avoid alcohol, smoking, and any medications not approved by your doctor.

If you plan to breastfeed or pump, it is worth thinking ahead about how you will track output and freezer stash. Stash is our companion iOS app for exclusive pumpers — sessions, stash locations, and goals in one place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a faint line at 14 DPO normal?

Yes, a faint line at 14 DPO is normal and typically indicates a real pregnancy with later implantation. Line darkness correlates with hCG levels, which vary based on when implantation occurred. A faint line that gets darker every 48 hours is reassuring.

What if I have a negative at 14 DPO but feel pregnant?

A negative at 14 DPO is less likely to be wrong than at earlier stages, but it is still not impossible for late implantation to produce a below-threshold result. If your period does not arrive, retest in 2–3 days. Persistent symptoms with a negative test should also be discussed with your doctor.

Should I take a digital test at 14 DPO?

Digital tests (like Clearblue Digital) require higher hCG levels to produce a result — typically 50 mIU/mL or more. At 14 DPO with later implantation, hCG may still be below this threshold even though a line test shows positive. If your line test is positive but a digital is negative, trust the line test.
